LARC SERVICES

LARC

Patient with doctor

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) is a category of contraceptive methods that offer effective, long-term protection against pregnancy with minimal user intervention. In the UK's National Health Service (NHS), LARC methods are promoted as highly reliable options for preventing unintended pregnancies and are readily available to individuals seeking contraception services.

There are several types of LARC methods available through the NHS:

  • Intrauterine Systems (IUSs): Similar to IUDs, IUSs are also inserted into the uterus but release the hormone progestogen to prevent pregnancy. In addition to their contraceptive effects, IUSs can also reduce menstrual bleeding and cramping for some individuals. They are typically effective for three to five years, depending on the specific product.
  • Contraceptive Implants: These are small, flexible rods that are inserted under the skin of the upper arm. They release a steady dose of progestogen hormones to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining. Contraceptive implants can provide contraception for up to three years and are reversible upon removal.

LARC methods offer several advantages over other forms of contraception:

  • Highly effective: LARC methods are among the most effective forms of contraception, with failure rates comparable to permanent sterilization.
  • Convenience: Once inserted, LARC methods require minimal ongoing effort from the user, providing long-term contraception without the need for daily or monthly intervention.
  • Reversible: Unlike permanent contraceptive methods such as sterilization, LARC methods are reversible, allowing individuals to regain fertility once the method is removed.
  • Privacy: LARC methods are discreet and do not require regular refills or prescriptions, offering privacy and convenience for users.

In the UK, LARC methods are available free of charge through NHS contraception services, including general practitioner (GP) practices, sexual health clinics, and community contraceptive clinics. Individuals can discuss their contraceptive options with a healthcare professional to determine the most suitable method based on their preferences, medical history, and contraceptive needs.

The NHS actively promotes LARC methods as part of its contraception services, aiming to increase awareness and access to these highly effective forms of birth control. By providing comprehensive information and support, the NHS aims to empower individuals to make informed choices about their reproductive health and prevent unintended pregnancies effectively.

Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is the term used for birth control that helps prevent pregnancy after just one treatment.

This service is open to patients aged 16+.
