MOVEMBER

November - Mens Health Awareness

alcohol awareness graphic

Movember is dedicated to improving men’s health by raising awareness of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's mental wellbeing. It encourages men to talk openly, seek help early, and attend routine health checks. Growing a moustache is a symbol of support, but the message is far deeper — it’s about saving lives.

What is Movember?

Movember is an annual campaign throughout November that focuses on key health issues affecting men. It aims to break the silence around men’s physical and mental health, encouraging early action, open conversation, and regular check-ups.

Key Men’s Health Focus Areas

Prostate Cancer

  • Most common cancer in UK men
  • Risk increases over age 50 or with family history
  • Symptoms may include difficulty urinating or needing to go more often at night

Testicular Cancer

  • Most common cancer in younger men (15–45)
  • Usually treatable if found early
  • Men should check regularly for lumps or changes

Men’s Mental Health & Suicide Prevention

  • Suicide is a leading cause of death in men under 50
  • Men are less likely to seek help
  • Encouraging open conversation can save lives

Key Messages for Patients

  • "Don’t ignore changes – get checked."
  • Speak to your GP about urinary symptoms, pain, or lumps
  • It’s okay to talk about how you feel – help is available
  • Support is confidential and non-judgmental

How to Support Movember

  • Grow a moustache or host awareness events
  • Share NHS resources on men’s health
  • Encourage friends and family to check in with the men in their lives
