LUNG CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

November - Lung Cancer Awareness

Lung Cancer Awareness Month is dedicated to increasing understanding of the signs, risks, and importance of early diagnosis. It is one of the most common and serious types of cancer in the UK, and early detection can greatly improve outcomes. This month encourages patients to speak up if they notice persistent symptoms, particularly a cough that doesn’t go away.

What is Lung Cancer Awareness Month?

Lung Cancer Awareness Month focuses on raising awareness of lung cancer symptoms, encouraging earlier diagnosis, and supporting those affected. Lung cancer can affect anyone, not only those who smoke. Many people delay seeking help, which can lead to late diagnosis.

Key Symptoms to Look Out For

  • A persistent cough lasting 3 weeks or more
  • Breathlessness or wheezing
  • Chest or shoulder pain
  • Coughing up blood
  • Unexplained weight loss or fatigue

If patients experience these symptoms, especially if they are ongoing, they should contact their GP without delay.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Early detection gives the best chance of successful treatment. Lung health checks, chest X-rays, and scans can identify problems sooner, often before major symptoms develop.

Risk Factors

  • Smoking remains the main risk factor
  • Exposure to second-hand smoke, asbestos or pollution
  • Family history of lung cancer
  • Previous lung disease

Support and Prevention

Patients are encouraged to seek help to stop smoking and attend screening or health checks if invited. Support services and stop smoking clinics are available through the NHS and local pharmacies.
